A 13-piece, Montreal-based collective that shares members of GY!BE, Fly Pan Am, and others. The band's use of found sound gives the impression of watching a film with no picture. --Jenny Pfafflin Supersilent, 6 [ECM] I'm more partial to "5," which we have, but this will no doubt still make my year end list. Lovely. Dark and chilly improvisations, Supersilent has recently drawn comparisons to GY!BE -- and I think it's fair. The two groups operate with similar atmospherics. --Jenny Pfafflin Maja Ratkje, Voice [Rune Grammofon] Dude. Awesome. Just what the title of the record says: Experiments with voice. Another one for the year end list. We have to get in the Fe-Mail stuff too -- it's Maja and Hild from SPUNK. --Jenny Pfafflin The Majesticons, The Beauty Party [Thrill Jockey] mike ladd gets together with loads of people after being in anti-pop consortium and makes a bling debauchery epic. every song is called a party: the volvo party, gentrification party, intro party and - my favorite - the after prom party. stupid beats and scathing words. weird al would've been a good guest ---David Parisi Wolf Eyes, Dread [Bulb] This album is awesome. Listen to it start to finish. The best of the many recent Wolf Eyes albums I've heard. --Jacob Heule Chris Burn Ensemble, Horizontals White Another free improv super group. --Jacob Heule Nikolas Francis Unit, Blessing Demo Independently released 3-song demo. Sax plus electronics. Pretty fucking good. I hope to hear more from this guy. --Jacob Heule Jori Hulkkonen & Laurent Garnier, Classic & Rare [F Communications] as much as i would never admit it, i sometimes listen to house music and really like it. this two disc set is from France's long running electric lore full: F Communications. check it out if you like dance beats of any kind whatsoever. Highlights include a tilting sing-song by Avril, a loud kick drum by Scan X, some worldly percussion of Aqua Bassino and a just great last song on Garnier's second cd. i can't get into all of it, but there are some good songs on this collection. --David Parisi Fruit Bats, Mouthfuls [Sub Pop] beach boys influenced pop strummings. lately i burn almost every release from sub pop. this is similar sounding to their other recent stuff - holopaw and iron and wine - except with more melodies and sing alongs. warm sounds for your farmer's tans. --David Parisi Entrance, The Kingdom... [Tiger Style] the beginning of the first song alone is awesome. a singer with his freaky guitar and some effects is making tripped-out sounding folk and blues. this reminds me of hanging out under the railroad tracks, on a bridge, watching river pollution float. then along would come this singer, belting out a loud song. he'd then ask if any of our names were carved into the wood and if he could be put in a heart. --David Parisi Cul De Sac, Death of the Sun [Strange Attractors Audio House] These dudes have been the backing band for Damo Suzuki (Can) of late -- and this record is pretty rad. A collection of influences, from Krautrock to Eastern India. And a little bit of that Canterbury scene, a la Henry Cow or the Art Bears. --Jenny Pfafflin Comments: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Goddamn that's a lot of reviews, but it's been three weeks since the last chart and the WSUM message board has been busy. Dubometry/Pure Tone Audiometry/Phonography 2. Aarktica/Origami Arktika. Oh well. I wish I didn't get 75 bounced messages every time I send this out. --Jacob Felix Heule, Experimental Music Director
