That doesn't have much to do with the sound of the album, but I thought you should know. "Plays Well" consists of two live solo electric guitar pieces slightly over 36 minutes apiece. The first piece, "Remington Khan", is all guitar and keeps a fairly fast pace picking under a high E string ostinato. The second piece, "The Old Victrola", starts with a long sample of Captain Beefheart (or someone who sounds like him) doing some solo vocals as Alan Licht's guitar comes in with some indie rock strumming. Soon this is abruptly cut off and replaced with a looping measure of a female singer holding a note over some Love Boat style disco beats. Licht's guitar drones in the background in the same pitch as the singer until the loop breaks the pattern and goes into the full song for a good 5 minutes or so. Eventually Licht starts playing again and the song fades out. Then more droning experimental guitar work and some vocals. Very cool stuff! David Parisi (on hiatus): Missy Misdemeanor Elliot - MissE...So Addictive [The Gold Mind, Inc./Elektra]: Having not heard much of Missy Elliot before, I'm now stuck on this record. Hip-hop, r+b, bass, soul and even some weird parts melt together into a low-end, yelling out-loud explosion. Timbaland leaks his fantastic programming all around Missy and her many guests. And that Missy pulls out all sorts of crazy noises and lyrics. Although there are too many references to E for my tastes, they're all having fun and making me shake my tread-marked ass anyways. Missy tells those who helped put together this record, "Ya'll made this album even sound hot in a Yugo!" I'm up for listening to it in as many vehicles as posible, because it does sound good in all the ones I've been n so far. Yet, that's another story. what you need to know is that, no matter where you are, this summertime is ripe for some booming and this record has juice. Comments: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm back from backpacking in Yellowstone and whatnot. Summer schedule time. Matt Goins and I are still in our old time slots (Mondays from 6pm-midnight). Jennifer Pfafflin has a somewhat avant-garde show on Wednesday nights from 10pm to 1am. I'll continue sending this chart out every two weeks or so. Still looks like we'll have a tower by this fall. Thanks for your support. --Jacob Heule (Program Director / Experimental Music Director)
